As an obvious outsider due to her tan and her Okinawan dialect, the young girl had difficulties fitting in and only found solace by retreating into what she already was doing in her hometown: Practicing Judo. She became rather good at it and eventually attended local Junior tournaments in Mishima proving her talent. At one fateful evening, on her way home after training and shortly after winning a tournament, she heard something strange: The struck strings of an electric instrument. She knew about Rock, a bit at least, but it was Kogen's first live experience of such music and she sneaked towards it. It was teenagers practicing together at a remote place. Frankly, they were terrible, but Kogen couldn't forget the big smiles on their faces, the raw energy, the carefree spirit. It was different from her structured Budōka life. She got spotted, but the band was welcoming and let her pluck the bass when they took a rest. Soon enough, Kogen too had a big smile on her face. The years after, she inherited the band's old bass guitar at some point when the band improved and began making gigs at indie clubs in Mishima and Kogen secretly trained, wielding headphones so her parents and grandparents wouldn't notice it immediately. It helped that she discovered a loose board under her bed, with the space under it large enough to hide the guitar. As if it was destiny that brought her towards music. The cheery nature she adopted from learning bass spilled over into other parts of her life, making her fit into school and eventually becoming part of a circle of friends centered around the unlikely pair of Akamatsu and Saihara. Those were the days of happiness, until Hanako's untimely and unfortunate death. Like a prank from fate itself, soon after her death, her parents re-invested in their Okinawan business and it paid off, prompting Kogen to move back. Both friends and her guitar had to be left behind and only the martial arts remained when returning to Nakijin. Returning to normalcy. The shallow life of chasing after trophies. The messages with her former friends grew more and more sparse and shallow. The carefree spirit, the raw energy, the big smile on her face was sealed away. Two years later, Kogen arranged for an extended holiday at her grandparents' place. The plan was to take some time to relax from her usual duties, maybe reconnect with old ties, but ultimatively it was also to finally and properly visit Hanako's grave, something she wasn't able to do before. But only a day after her arrival, Satoshi, who was one of the few who got informed of her visit, called Kogen with the most bizarre information she ever heard of. Once again, the unlikely pair of Akamatsu and Saihara has made an impact on her regulated life.
